Adler Planetarium and Artemis II: When the Whole Family Gets Curious

We planned a family trip to the Adler Planetarium in Chicago timed loosely around the Artemis II mission. The idea was simple: the kids had been asking questions about space (prompted by some YouTube content and a library book about the Moon), and we wanted to ride that wave of curiosity while it was active rather than letting it dissipate into the next interest cycle.

What we got was one of the best family outings we've had, not because the Adler is particularly fancy (though it's good), but because all the conditions aligned: the kids were curious, the content was accessible, and we didn't overstay.

The Setup

For context, taking our kids to a museum requires more preparation than a neurotypical family might need (similar to what I've described with traveling with kids). The sensory environment matters (crowd density, noise levels, lighting), the pacing matters (short focused engagements versus long immersive ones), and the exit strategy always needs to be clear. We've had museum trips go sideways because we misjudged one of these variables.

For the Adler trip, we did the prep that works for us: checked crowd estimates for our target day, identified the two or three exhibits most aligned with current interest, built a visual schedule showing the sequence (drive, park, exhibit one, snack break, exhibit two, gift shop if time/energy allows, done), and agreed in advance that leaving early is always an option and never a failure.

What Worked

The Artemis II timing gave the visit a narrative anchor that regular museum trips lack. This wasn't abstract space education. It was happening now. Real astronauts. A real mission. Real hardware being prepared for real flight. That temporal connection transformed the exhibits from "information about space" into "context for a current event we're following together," and the kids engaged at a level I hadn't expected.

My older kid spent 20 minutes at an exhibit about lunar geology, asking questions faster than I could answer them. My younger one was drawn to the scale model of the solar system and kept running between planets comparing distances. Neither was being dragged through content. They were self-directing, which is the best possible outcome for a neurodivergent kid in a stimulating environment: intrinsic motivation overriding the sensory cost of being in a crowded public space.

Diving Deep as a Family

The part I want to highlight isn't the museum itself. It's what happened in the weeks after. The Adler trip catalyzed a family deep-dive into space that extended well beyond the single outing:

None of this was forced. None of it was assigned. The museum visit planted seeds, and the follow-up emerged organically because we didn't over-structure the interest or turn it into a learning objective (the same fun-first philosophy we apply to all their activities).

The Neurodivergent Advantage

Something I've observed with our kids (and I want to be careful to scope this to our experience, not generalize about all neurodivergent children) is that when a topic clicks, the depth of engagement is extraordinary. The same intensity that makes transitions hard and unexpected changes overwhelming also produces hyperfocused deep dives that neurotypical peers might not sustain. Space became the topic for weeks. Every bedtime conversation. Every drawing. Every library visit.

The parenting challenge is recognizing when that intensity is emerging and feeding it without smothering it. Providing resources without making it a curriculum. Answering questions without lecturing. Being a co-explorer rather than a teacher. The Adler trip worked because we entered as a family that was curious together, not as parents delivering an educational experience to children.

Why Timing Matters

The Artemis II connection wasn't accidental. We've learned that current events provide better hooks than evergreen topics for our kids. "Let's go learn about space" is abstract and resistable. "Astronauts are going to the Moon soon and we can see the rocket stuff at a museum" is concrete and urgent. The temporal dimension (this is happening now, you're experiencing it in real time alongside the rest of the world) creates engagement that static content can't match.

All of this goes to say: if your kid is showing curiosity about something, the window for action is now, not next month. Interest is perishable, especially for kids whose attention is intensely focused but shifts unpredictably. When the wave appears, ride it. Plan the trip, get the books, have the conversations. The investment of one good outing during peak curiosity produces more lasting engagement than ten obligatory educational outings when the interest isn't there.

We're already watching for the next wave. Whatever it is, we'll be ready to follow it.
